Summer Camp is cancelled

posted May 15, 2020, 10:06 AM by Alex Karn

As Mr. Karn announced at last night's virtual Troop meeting, summer camp is cancelled. Attached is the E-Mail from Todd Warner, Director of Camping from Washington Crossing Council. There will be further discussion among Troop leaders and parents regarding the financial options listed.

Dear camp leaders and coordinators,

It is with a heavy heart we inform you of the closure of Ockanickon Scout Reservation for the 2020 summer camp season. This unanimous decision was made late last night by our Council’s Executive Committee after a very thorough discussion. After reviewing guidance from the CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health, the consensus was the risk of running a summer camp season was too great. The health and safety of our Scouts, Scouters, volunteers and employees must be our top priority.

As of today, Bucks County, Pennsylvania remains in the “red” zone of Governor Wolf’s re-open PA plan. Even in the “yellow” zone, restrictions would make camp operation untenable. Furthermore, we haven’t received our permit from the Department of Health to operate an “organized campground.”

For us as a youth, summer camp was the highlight of our Scouting year. Now as professional Scouters, we get to enjoy summer camp from a completely different perspective. It still remains the highlight of our year. I know this decision will be extremely disappointing for the many Scouts and leaders who were anticipating a summer camp experience. It is even more so for our dedicated staff.

As promised, your camp fees paid toward the 2020 season are fully refundable. Here are a few options for your consideration:

  1. If your unit wishes to return for the 2021 season, roll over the $150 unit deposit and we will lock in the 2020 camp fee rates. The balance of camp fees paid will be refunded.
  2. If your unit decides to return for the 2021 season and chooses to roll their 2020 fees paid toward the 2021 camp fees, the Council will provide a coupon worth 3% of the balance after deducting the $150 unit deposit. This coupon can be used toward any additional payments in 2021 camp fees. In addition, we will lock in the 2020 camp fee rates.
  3. If your unit is undecided on its 2021 plans, a full refund will be provided.

We will follow up in another email next week with your account balance and the process to select any of these options.

We look forward to serving you in the future.

With our personal warm regards,

Magne Gundersen
